Popcorn is one of America's truly native foods. Even before Columbus set sail for the New World, Native Americans were popping corn in shallow clay pots. Today, Americans eat 63 quarts of popcorn per man, woman and child each year. And while movies and popcorn seem to go together, theaters are not the largest users of popcorn - approximately 70 percent is purchased by consumers at retail stores in both raw and popped form and eaten at home.

The first rapid test to detect chronic wasting disease in deer has been granted a license by the United States Department of Agriculture for use nationwide. The test was validated by Colorado State University's Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in cooperation with other Colorado State agencies.

A Colorado State University English associate professor has been selected as a 2002 Fulbright Scholar to teach American studies in Germany. Chip Rhodes, senior lecturer and past director of American Studies at Colorado State, will teach two classes at the University of Dortmund from March - August 2003. One class concentrates on the past, present and future of Hollywood while the other focuses on the Harlem Renaissance.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic and sometimes debilitating condition that affects about 1 percent of the population, most of whom are women. Characterized by muscle and joint pain and stiffness, general fatigue and sleep disturbances, fibromyalgia is not well understood. Currently, there is no specific or standardized therapy for fibromyalgia patients. Eating a healthful diet coupled with regular physical activity may help reduce symptoms.

Last week we talked about the physical problems that arise when people worry about too much debt. The culprit is often the overuse of credit cards. According to www.Myvesta.org, 48 percent of those surveyed said they carry a balance on their credit cards. Consumers between the ages of 25-34 have the highest credit card debt with an average of $3,843 on two cards. The average planned expenditures for holiday gifts in 2001 for those between the ages of 35-44 was $889.

All are warning signs of diabetes, a multisystem disease that affects some 16 million Americans, over one-third of whom don't even know they have the disease. What's more, another 16 to 20 million Americans have what is now called "prediabetes," a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes.

Colorado State University's DroughtLab is hosting the Colorado Drought Conference: Managing Water Supply and Demand in the Time of Drought from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Lory Student Center on the university's main campus. The conference, being attended by water managers, public officials and leading water and climate researchers, will analyze current water management issues and examine options to mitigate negative impacts of drought for the future.
