    Healthy Aging Column - Caregivers Need Care as Well

    The neighborhood where I have lived for a dozen years has relatively few young families. Most households consist of an elderly single person or couple. One couple in particular has continued to live a fairly active lifestyle, considering their ages. There are the expected age-related issues and occasional illnesses, but they handily execute life's daily tasks of housekeeping, meals and minor yard work. Driving to the grocery store or the doctor has not become an unreasonable chore for them. On some occasions they take out of town trips to visit relatives. At this point they are doing OK, but I imagine the day will arrive when one becomes dependent and the other tries to manage full-time care of the spouse as well as the household chores.

    Alan Tucker, 56, Colorado State University Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and a respected teacher, researcher and administrator, drowned Jan. 6 while on vacation in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Arrangements for a memorial service in his honor will be announced as soon as they are available.

    For the third year in a row, the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University and the National Weather Service are teaming up Jan. 27-29 to display and discuss weather conditions, climate trends and forecasting, as well as to provide advice to Colorado's agricultural community, at the annual Colorado Farm Show at the Island Grove Regional Park in Greeley.

    Dupont Donates Intellectual Property to Colorado State for Development, Marketing of Novel Process to Clean Hazardous Soils

    The College of Engineering at Colorado State University today announced it received patent and grant gifts from DuPont that support the development and commercialization of an innovative process to clean contaminated soils. The technology holds the promise of being far more effective and much less expensive than current options for cleanup of such hazardous waste areas as Superfund national priority list sites, Department of Defense facilities, agricultural storage facilities, chemical plants, automotive maintenance facilities, dry cleaners and other sites contaminated with chlorinated solvents.

    Colorado State Alum Receives Livestock Leader of the Year

    Jack Maddux, rancher and agriculture industry leader, will receive the Livestock Leader of the Year award from Colorado State University's Department of Animal Sciences on Saturday, January 17. The award is given annually at the National Western Stock Show on Colorado State University Agricultural Outreach Day to recognize people who have made outstanding contributions to the state's livestock industry.

    Colorado State University ranks 8th in the nation among large colleges and universities in the number of alumni actively serving as Peace Corps volunteers, according to 2004 rankings recently released by the Peace Corps. Seventy-three Colorado State graduates currently are working overseas as Peace Corps volunteers.

    Colorado high school students, their parents and the community can learn about engineering majors and careers at Colorado State University's Engineering Careers Explorations Day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 21. The informative event, free and open to the public, will be held in the Lory Student Center on the Colorado State campus, with the opening session taking place next door in the Engineering Building Auditorium.
