In fall 2009, Colorado State University's Department of Ethnic Studies will offer a master's degree in ethnic studies, making it the first and only master's program of its kind in Colorado. The program will address issues related to the growing diversity of U.S. society and its workforce, ethnic conflict worldwide and globalization.

A team of Colorado State University researchers have been awarded $1.5 million to accelerate research in the development of new crops for cellulosic biofuels. Cellulosic biofuels, unlike ethanol derived from corn starch, are made from cellulose - a major component of cell walls in stems and leaves of all plants. Cellulose is superior to starch because there is much more energy available from it per plant.

The Colorado State Forest Service is accepting proposals for the Colorado Community Forest Restoration grant program. The program was established by the 2007 Colorado General Assembly and was continued through the passage of Senate Bill 71 in 2008. Up to $2 million in grant funds will be available through the program this year, thanks to the addition of $1 million in federal funding. Grant applications are due by 4 p.m., Oct. 10 and awards will be announced in early November.

Mark Wdowik, president and chief executive officer of CSU Management Corp., a for-profit subsidiary corporation of CSU Ventures, and Dr. Douglas Thamm, assistant professor of oncology, will speak about how the university is one of the first public institutions in the nation to assemble a seed investment fund for CSU start-ups and research partners. An award of a Bill and Melinda Gates Grant to Colorado State University's tuberculosis research program will allow scientists to continue pursuing new discoveries including a new finding that questions long-held beliefs about how tuberculosis often reoccurs in a person with the infection and why traditional tuberculosis treatments work so slowly.

Every two months, almost 30 dogs, mostly greyhounds, make a trip from their homes with local residents to the Colorado State University Veterinary Medical Center to donate blood. Their efforts save hundreds of dogs at the center each year, including dogs rushed to the facility's 24-hour emergency service, in critical care or dogs undergoing surgery.

Mountain pine beetles are making history in Colorado. They have infested more than 1.5 million acres of lodgepole pine, an infestation that is unprecedented in Colorado's recorded history. The infestation has been intensifying and spreading to new areas, and at current rates of spread, it is likely that mountain pine beetles will kill the majority of Colorado's mature lodgepole pine.

Colorado State University's Equine Sciences program will recognize seven donors in an event to be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at the B. W. Pickett Equine Center in Fort Collins. Banners will be placed in the rafters of the Equine Center Arena to recognize donors' contributions to the program. Each donor has given at least $100,000 to support a certain aspect of Colorado State's renowned Equine Sciences program.

Former Colorado State University swimmer Amy Van Dyken believes the record-breaking performance by Michael Phelps at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will stand as one of the Games' most lasting memories. Phelps broke swimmer Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals at one Olympics by swimming to eight gold medals in Beijing. Van Dyken said her last Olympic experience at the 2000 Sydney Games was Phelps' first Olympic Games. "I have pictures and video of a very lost-looking Michael Phelps trying to find his way around the pool area," said Van Dyken.

The Colorado State University Police Department will be patrolling campus with four environmentally friendly T3 electric law enforcement units. The T3's electric motor has zero gas emissions, which will add a "green" hue to the current police fleet.
