The study of honeybees and their social structure can give scientists a greater understanding of how infectious disease spreads among animals and humans, says a Colorado State University professor who has embarked on a five-year study of honeybee behavior, funded by a National Science Foundation CAREER award.

Ground will break the first week of January on a 2,200 square-foot expansion of International House, a Colorado State University apartment complex which houses about 200 students. The expansion will include a large multi-purpose room with lounge and study space as well as recreational activities like pool, foosball and ping pong. New programming space will feature a fireplace, wireless Internet access and future plans include adding large screen televisions and projection equipment for events.

Snuggles and Austin live in Texas and are with Minis and Friends of the Sough Plains. The two are part of a group of miniature horses that travel across the state of Texas visiting rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, Alzheimer's units, special needs children centers and hospitals to bring cheer to patients through equine therapeutic healing. Although it’s unlikely that Snuggles will ever have an ability to see well, her work to help others has not been hindered by her sight. Austin is traveling with Snuggles to keep her company.

Florant says Punxsutawney Phil, that industrious Pennsylvania groundhog who emerges each Feb. 2 to study his shadow, can teach scientists something about the relationship between food intake and body mass, bringing greater understanding of the hibernation process.
