Colorado State University’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will begin testing samples from pets submitted by veterinarians for H1N1 after a small number of companion animals have tested positive for the flu. The laboratory is also offering tips to pet owners about keeping their pets healthy this flu season.

Increasing atmospheric nitrogen deposits in lakes and watersheds in Colorado and around the world are directly affecting the life they contain. A Colorado State University research scientist contributed to two new scientific papers published today that explain how extra nitrogen in undisturbed lakes is changing the nutrient balance available to algae, the small aquatic plants at the base of the food chain.

Colorado State University this month unveils a PET/CT scanner that is the first of its kind in any hospital in the world and the only PET/CT scanner dedicated to serving the needs of veterinary patients. The scanner is specially tailored for veterinary medicine, allowing it to be used on small and large animals.

Colorado State University and its School of Global Environmental Sustainability will host a special test screening of “Climate Refugees,” a documentary examining the plight of 25 million people displaced by climate change, at 6 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Lory Student Center Theatre. The film will be shown at United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Copenhagen later this year.

The Colorado State Forest Service, an outreach agency of the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University, received two U.S. Forest Service grants to distribute on a competitive basis through Requests for Proposals. A $6.25 million grant will create or retain jobs focused on implementing high-priority forest restoration and fuels mitigation projects, and strengthening Colorado’s wood products industries. A second grant for $4.465 million will help fund jobs affiliated with developing and implementing Community Wildfire Protection Plans.
